Policy and campaigns volunteer internships

Volunteering opportunities with our busy policy and campaigns team

The Howard League for Penal Reform is looking for a volunteer intern to support the work of the policy and campaigns team. Training and development opportunities will be provided.

Main purpose of the role

To assist a busy campaigns and policy team in: researching and writing policy briefings on topics including prisons, probation, policing, sentencing and legislation; contributing to campaigns, press and social media output; helping maintain our database of contacts and stakeholders; and supporting the team prepare for events and update the website.

Person specification

We are looking for enthusiastic and self-motivated people with an interest in criminal justice, politics, the media and the voluntary sector. Successful applicants will have excellent written and oral communication skills, team working skills and be computer and social media literate.


This is a voluntary post based at the Howard League for Penal Reform’s office, 1 Ardleigh Road, London N1 4HS.

Training will be provided, including database and website training.

The internship is part-time and days are negotiable. The internship is part of a rolling programme of internships at the Howard League; each internship lasts for a minimum period of three months.

We will pay travel expenses within London Zone 1–4 and lunch expenses.
