Justice and fairness during COVID-19

In the short time this blog has been running, we’ve discussed the issues of justice and fairness during the pandemic on several occasions, most notably here.

The Howard League’s latest submission to the Justice Select Committee, drills down further into some of the issues we are seeing through our legal work with children and young adults in custody.

Our concerns include Parole Board directions for release being frustrated by a lack of Approved Premises placements, ensuring effective participation requirements do not result in extended detention, the serious delay faced in complex cases, and our concern that remand prisoners are being unnecessarily detained in such potentially infectious conditions. You can read more on these issues here.

We will be returning to COVID-19 issues over the coming weeks but this blog will also consider some of the findings of our pre-pandemic research into how the principles of justice and fairness should operate in the prison system.
