In this Spotlights special, we examine the state of prisons today and consider the key issues that the next government should focus on.

By the prison service’s own measure of safe and decent accommodation, there are fewer than 80,000 prison places in England and Wales. But on the 14 June the population stood at 87,347 – and official projections indicate that it could rise to almost 115,000 by March 2028. This is simply unsustainable.

Whichever party wins the election faces a huge task to tackle the problems in prisons and help more people to move on from crime.

Join our panel of experts as we examine the key issues the next government will need to address and answer your questions about the state of prisons today and the wider criminal justice system.

    The panel will include:

    • Andrea Coomber KC (Hon.), Chief Executive at the Howard League
    • Andrew Neilson, Director of Campaigns
    • Gemma Abbott, Legal Director.

RSVP to join us for this free event, on Thursday 11 July, 12pm to 1pm, online via Zoom webinar.
