Briefing for House of Lords debate on the prison and probation service in England and Wales

“We welcome this timely debate at a time when the government is committed to spending so much money on new prisons. Endemic overcrowding contributes to sustained poor conditions and high levels of violence, and impacts what prisons are able to do (namely, rehabilitate). We challenge this commitment to spending so much money on new prisons when we are unable to properly staff, resource and run the prisons we already have.”
