Annual Members’ Meeting

  • Date: 5 Dec 2023

  • Location: Online

As another turbulent year for criminal justice draws to a close, we look forward to welcoming members at our annual meeting to reflect on our achievements in 2023 and turn our attention to a busy programme in the months to come.

This was a year when the state of prisons in England and Wales made headlines across the world – on grim conditions, overcrowding, and even a high-profile escape – which chimed with the hundreds of letters and calls we received from people inside and their families. It resulted in government proposals to reintroduce targeted early release and legislate for a presumption against short sentences.

We provided legal advice and support to many children and young adults in prison, produced educational resources to help people understand remand and recall, supported grassroots campaigns groups, held packed-out events at party conferences, and made a host of recommendations for reform in the final report of our Commission on Crime and Gambling-Related Harms.

But this event is a chance to hear about what we intend to do next – focusing on the acute crisis in prisons, with particular emphasis on the growing use of remand, the ongoing IPP scandal, joint enterprise and sentencing. We look forward to answering your questions and hearing your ideas.

At this event you will hear from:

  • Andrea Coomber KC (Hon.), Chief Executive.
  • Andrew Neilson, Director of Campaigns.
  • Gemma Abbott, Legal Director.

Join us on Tuesday 5 December, 12.30pm to 1.30pm, online via Zoom.
