Fringe events at the 2022 Labour Party Conference

  • Date: 26 Sep 2022

  • Location: ACC Liverpool, King’s Dock, Liverpool Waterfront, L3 4FP (within the secure zone)

The Howard League for Penal Reform is to hold two fringe events at the Labour Party Conference – one looking at the future for prisons and the other focusing on the links between crime and gambling-related harms.

Both events are scheduled to take place on Monday 26 September 2022.

What’s the future for prisons?

Monday 26 September 2022 – 1pm to 2pm

ACC Liverpool, King’s Dock, Liverpool Waterfront, L3 4FP: Hall 2, Room 6 (secure zone)

The government has published a white paper on the future of prisons, with the expectation that the prison population will increase by more than 20 per cent over the next five years.

What are the implications for the government’s plans and can anything be done to arrest the growth in prison numbers?

Panel

Andrea Coomber KC (Hon.), Chief Executive, Howard League for Penal Reform
Ellie Reeves MP, shadow Justice minister
Kate Green MP, former Shadow Secretary of State for Education
Baroness Chakrabarti CBE, former Shadow Attorney General and Director of Liberty
Andrew Neilson, Director of Campaigns, Howard League for Penal Reform (chair)

What are the links between crime and gambling-related harms?

Monday 26 September 2022 – 6pm to 7pm

ACC Liverpool, King’s Dock, Liverpool Waterfront, L3 4FP: Hall 2, Room 6 (secure zone)

The Commission on Crime and Gambling Related Harms was set up by the Howard League for Penal Reform in 2019 to answer three questions:

What are the links between gambling related harms and crime?

What impact do these links have on communities and society?

And what should be done?
